Background: Emergency medicine (EM) research has experienced a period of rapid expansion, particularly in the wake of global health crises like the ongoing SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. Bibliometric analysis allows us to evaluate influential publications and emerging trends.
Objective: To analyse highly cited publications in the emergency medicine category, as indexed in Scopus, between 2020 and 2025.
Methods: A bibliometric study was conducted using the Scopus database. Highly cited articles were identified based on citation counts. Data on authorship, journals, institutions, countries and keywords were analysed.
Results: Research output increased significantly after 2020, with peaks linked to pandemic-related studies. Publication output was dominated by the United States, the United Kingdom, and China. Key themes included Covid-19, Sepsis, Trauma and Artificial intelligence
Conclusion: The period from 2020 to 2025 reflects a shift towards global health emergencies and digital innovations in emergency medicine. Future research should emphasise global collaboration and equitable distribution of research.
